Great Britain uses party-list proportional representation to elect members to the European Parliament, with Scotland, Wales, and each of the English regions using their own party lists, with seats apportioned using the D'Hondt method. (Northern Ireland uses the single transferable vote instead.)
This is a simple calculator to let you experiment with the D'Hondt method of allocation as it applies to real world European parliamentary elections.
See this in action with some 2014 results.
Party name | Percentage of vote received | No. of votes received | |
---|---|---|---|
{{ party.voters | round(0) }} | |||
TOTALS | {{ allPartiesPercent | round }} | {{ percentageToVoters(allPartiesPercent) | round(0) }} |
After the votes are tallied, successive quotients are calculated for each party. The party with the largest quotient wins a seat and its quotient is recalculated. This is repeated until there are no more seats left to allocate.
